In 1886, Franken's brother Boie Nessan, hearing of land being given away in America to anyone willing to homestead it, emigrated from Germany.  However, when he arrived, the land in the area he wanted was all gone.  Hearing of a German Settlement near Sedalia, Missouri, he went there.   He claimed a homestead, built a log cabin, and settled in.  Life had been hard in Germany and Boie was very happy with what he had found in America.  He urged his family, including Nicholas and Franken, to emigrate as well.

On August 10, 1888, Nicholas Knutz went before the Tating local administrative committee and asked the local government to purchase his home so that he and his family could emigrate to America.  The value of the house, according to the fire insurance list, was 930 marks; the government offered him 900 Deutschmarks.  He accepted.  Not long afterward, Nicholas, Franken, and their children boarded the ship "Amalfi",  and they  arrived in the port of New York on Sept. 22, 1888.

Nicholas and Franken, who was known as "Dorothy", settled in Pettis county, Missouri, near Sedalia, where they worked on their farm and raised their children.  Their grandson, Bill Knutz, only met his grandparents once, when he was about 6 and the family made the long trip from South Dakota to Missouri.  He remembers his grandfather as "seeming like a giant", "raw boned".  He said Nicholas had coal black hair and a red, brush-like mustache.  He made his living as a farmer in Missouri, as he did in Germany.  Bill didn't remember much of his grandmother, but Bill's sister Mabel said she was a quilter, sending their family much-needed quilts for the long South Dakota winters.

Nicholas and Franken were members of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Sedalia.
