Adams Family History

John and Julia (Van Brocklin) Adams

John Quincy Adams, the son of Abial Abbot and Irene (Gray) Adams, was born 12 Jul 1831 in Newport, Orleans co., Vermont, a town his grandfather's family first settled. At the age of 16, he went on his own to Burlington, Vermont, where he attended college, except during the winters when he taught school to pay for his studies. In 1849, he went back to his father's house for two years before striking out on his own again, this time to Stephenson co., Illinois, where he taught school and worked as a carpenter.

Gold Rush fever struck John Adams, and in 1853 he boarded a steamer bound for California to work in the gold mines, and he had fair success, enough to return to Stephenson county and purchase a 240 acre farm. While in California, he became a member of the Masonic lodge, and he continued this membership the remainder of his life. His land was in Florence twp. was just outside the village of Florence. He was a member of the Evangelical church at Florence, having changed from the Baptist church at Freeport.

On 18 Feb 1858, he married Miss Julia Van Brocklin, daughter of Conrad and Harriet (Searle) Van Brocklin, prominent pioneers of Florence twp.  By 1900 he was working as a store keeper, and two years later retired completely and joined several of his children in Sutherland, O'Brien co., Iowa. Once there, he joined with the Methodist church. He was a landowner, owning not only his 240 acre farm in O'Brien co., but two pieces of land in Sutherland.

Julia Adams died on 24 Feb 1905, and was buried at Waterman Cemetery, just outside of Sutherland. John died on 16 Nov 1907, from pneumonia, in Hampton, Iowa, while visiting his daughter Hattie and her family. He was buried next to his wife in Waterman Cemetery.
