Fourth Generation

59. Frederick Asmus SEEMANN was born on 20 Nov 1836 in , Schleswig-Holstein, Germany to John Henry and Anna Maria "Mary" SEEMANN.

He came to America about 1853, at the age of 17, and he traveled extensively.  In 1859, getting "gold fever", he and his brothers Henry, Peter, and their cousin John, walked from Clinton, Iowa to California.  With no railroads available to make their travel easier, this was their only option, and it took 6 months to get there. The trip was not without its dangers from Indians.  He made money from the gold mining, but having a "charitable heart", he apparently didn't come home with much of it.

He married German immigrant Mary D. KRUMWEIDE 16 Jun 1866.  She was born about 1846 at Hanover, Germany, to Lewis and Catherine (MANGELER) KRUMWEIDE.  They had eight children, five of whom lived to adulthood.  For a time they made their home in western Iowa, but he moved his family to Preston, Jackson co., Iowa, to help take care of his father-in-law, and to afford his children better educational opportunities.

After an illness of several months, he died on 12 Apr 1916 in Sabula, Jackson co., Iowa.  He was buried at Methodist Episcopalian Church in Sabula.
