My birth occurred at the home of Mother's aunt, Mrs. Frances Joyce (midwife), just south of Rockham. At any rate I was very small and not too healthy so they put me in an oven. So my kids go around saying I was half baked. Then they go on to say it was a good thing there weren't microwaves back then."

From History of Hand County by Scott Heidepriem, written by is by Kathryn Joyce Roeber:  Frances Joyce, better known as Ma Joyce, was a legend in northern Hand County. She was of German descent, and was from Iowa. Besides raising 10 children, she was always ready with her white Mother Hubbard apron to assist the doctor at the birth of any baby in the community. If the doctor didn't arrive on time, she took over and gave the newborn its first slap. It was all charity on her part, but she did tell of an incident during the depression days when the doctor remarked to her that he got five dollars. She answered back, "So did I, Doctor."
Governor Bushfield, just fresh out of law school, was asked by Ma Joyce to be her lawyer on a trial involving some farm grain. He won his first case and always told her that she was the cause of his success. She was a very strong woman. She held the kerosene lamp at the head of the kitchen table while doctors finished amputating the arm of a young man who had been caught in a corn shredder. This man later became chief of police in Spink County. During the flu epidemic in 1917, Ma Joyce, with her mustard plasters, hot bricks, and bags of hot salt went from house to house nursing pneumonia patients back to health. No job was too big for her and no contagious disease ever scared her away. Cancer took her life in 1937.

Frances married Patrick James Joyce124, son of Michael Joyce Sr. and Catherine Finnerty, on 19 Aug 1893 in Redfield, Spink co., South Dakota.125
